
China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) has showcased its sophisticated “SkyShield” integrated anti-UAV defense system at a recent international defense conference, highlighting its robust capabilities and growing global footprint. The system, which incorporates cutting-edge laser weapon technology alongside other defense measures, is touted by CETC as a highly effective solution for countering modern low-altitude aerial threats.
The SkyShield system is presented as a modular, comprehensive defense platform that seamlessly integrates radar and optical sensors with electronic jammers and directed-energy laser weapons. This multi-layered approach is specifically designed to neutralize reconnaissance and loitering drones, offering a potent defense for critical infrastructure, airfields, and urban areas against the evolving threat of unmanned aerial vehicles.
CETC claims remarkable operational success for the SkyShield, asserting a 100% interception rate during a live engagement that involved 21 drones. While not officially confirmed by Riyadh, this particular operation is believed to refer to a 2022 incident near Jeddah, where a SkyShield system reportedly protected a Saudi Patriot missile battery by intercepting 21 Houthi drones without any penetration. CETC representatives emphasized that SkyShield is part of a broader suite of counter-UAV solutions that have already been exported to approximately 20 countries, signifying its widespread adoption and competitive standing against Western systems.
Promoted as China’s first fully integrated anti-drone export product, SkyShield reflects Beijing’s significant advancements in directed energy weapon technology and layered air defense. The presentation included visual evidence, such as images of damaged drones and interactions between a Saudi military delegation and Chinese personnel, further underscoring the system’s operational deployment and international cooperation.
