Germany is set to significantly bolster its “Medium Forces” with a substantial investment in advanced Boxer RCT30 wheeled infantry fighting vehicles. The procurement, valued at approximately €3.9 billion ($4.5 billion), will be executed through the European Defense Agency OCCAR, marking a pivotal step in the ongoing modernization of the German Army.
The Boxer RCT30 represents a formidable new variant, ingeniously combining the proven Boxer wheeled armored platform with the cutting-edge unmanned RCT30 turret, which is derived from the formidable Puma infantry fighting vehicle. This integration brings a significant upgrade in firepower and capability to a wheeled platform, enhancing both mobility and lethality for ground operations.
The RCT30 turret is equipped with a stabilized 30mm autocannon, providing rapid and accurate fire against a range of targets. Furthermore, it features a twin launcher for anti-tank guided missiles, giving the Boxer RCT30 a potent punch against armored threats at extended ranges. This versatile armament makes the new vehicle a true multi-purpose asset on the modern battlefield.
A notable innovation with this acquisition is that the Boxer RCT30 will be the first variant in the Bundeswehr to be based on the Future Common Drive Module (FCDM). This standardized module is designed to streamline logistics, simplify maintenance, and optimize production processes, promising greater efficiency and readiness for the German armed forces over the long term.
This significant investment underscores Germany’s unwavering commitment to strengthening its military capabilities in line with its “Zeitenwende” (turning point) policy and NATO commitments. By acquiring these highly capable Boxer RCT30 vehicles, the German Army will significantly enhance its ability to deploy agile, well-protected, and heavily armed forces, crucial for meeting the complex security challenges of today and tomorrow.
