Germany is venturing into the next generation of air defense with the development of the Airborne Launching and Attack System (AirLAS), an innovative solution that marries the combat-proven IRIS-T guided missile with advanced autonomous drone technology. This groundbreaking system, a collaborative effort between Diehl Defence and POLARIS Raumflugzeuge GmbH, promises to deliver a highly flexible, cost-effective, and mobile interception capability for modern air threats.

The core concept of AirLAS revolves around an autonomous, reusable aerial carrier system – essentially a specialized drone – designed to launch the IRIS-T air-to-air missile. This integration extends the engagement range of the missile and allows for its deployment from various platforms, moving beyond traditional ground-based launchers or manned aircraft. Such flexibility is crucial for rapid response in dynamic operational environments, offering precision strike capabilities across diverse domains.

The IRIS-T missile itself is a formidable component, known for its exceptional maneuverability and effectiveness against a wide range of aerial targets.
