India’s indigenously developed Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) has officially made its global debut, with the powerful 155mm/52-calibre artillery system being inducted into the Armenian Ground Forces. This significant milestone marks a new chapter in India’s burgeoning defense manufacturing capabilities and its increasing presence in the global arms market.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with Kalyani Strategic Systems, the ATAGS is a testament to India’s “Make in India” initiative, aimed at bolstering domestic defense production and reducing reliance on foreign weapon systems. The system’s induction follows a crucial deal signed in August 2023, under which Armenia ordered six units of the advanced artillery system.

The export agreement, valued at approximately $155 million, underscores India’s increasing role as a reliable global defense supplier. For Armenia, this procurement further deepens its defense ties with India, building on previous acquisitions of Indian military hardware, including Swathi Weapon Locating Radars and Pinaka multi-barrel rocket systems.

The ATAGS itself boasts an array of cutting-edge features designed to enhance battlefield effectiveness. These features include an AI-enabled fire control system for precision targeting, an extended firing range, and impressive rapid mobility, enabling quick deployment and repositioning. These advanced capabilities position the ATAGS as a formidable asset for any modern military.

Kalyani Strategic Systems, a key industry partner in the ATAGS program, has seen remarkable success on the international stage, securing over $600 million in international defense orders as of 2024. This success highlights the increasing global confidence in the quality and performance of Indian-made defense products.

Armenia’s decision to integrate the ATAGS into its ground forces is a strong endorsement of India’s technological prowess and manufacturing excellence in the defense sector. It not only signifies a major step forward for India’s outreach to new defense markets but also reinforces its strategic partnerships on the global stage. This induction is a proud moment for India’s defense industry, showcasing its capacity to develop world-class military equipment and contribute to international security.
