Indonesia Explores Procurement of Italy's Giuseppe Garibaldi Aircraft Carrier

Indonesia is reportedly exploring the significant acquisition of the Italian Navy’s Giuseppe Garibaldi aircraft carrier, a move that could dramatically enhance its naval capabilities and influence within the Indo-Pacific region. This potential procurement signals Indonesia’s ambition to bolster its maritime power projection amidst an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.

The prospect of this high-profile acquisition came to light at the recent Indodefence 2025 exhibition in Jakarta. A scale model of a conceptual naval fleet, prominently featuring a vessel labeled “Giuseppe Garibaldi,” was displayed by REPUBLIKORP, sparking considerable interest. Confirming the Indonesian Navy’s serious interest, Mr. Mauro Mansini, Director of Sales for Fincantieri’s Naval Business Unit, revealed that discussions surrounding the carrier’s future are now at a “state-level” between the Italian and Indonesian governments. However, he emphasized that no formal decision has been made yet.

The Giuseppe Garibaldi, a seasoned vessel within the Italian fleet, is known for its versatility. The light aircraft carrier is capable of operating a diverse array of naval aviation assets, including drones, helicopters, and fixed-wing aircraft. Furthermore, its design allows for the deployment and support of amphibious assets, providing a significant multi-role capability for various maritime operations, from humanitarian assistance to combat roles.

For Indonesia, acquiring such a platform would represent a substantial leap forward in its naval modernization efforts. An aircraft carrier would significantly extend the operational reach of the Indonesian Navy, allowing it to project air and sea power far beyond its immediate territorial waters. This would be crucial for patrolling its vast archipelagic waters, securing vital sea lanes, and contributing to regional stability and disaster response efforts.

While the discussions are still in their preliminary stages, the mere consideration of procuring the Giuseppe Garibaldi underscores Indonesia’s strategic aspirations to become a more formidable maritime force in Southeast Asia. This potential acquisition would not only reshape Indonesia’s naval architecture but also carry significant implications for the balance of power in the wider Indo-Pacific.
