
Lockheed Martin Aeronautics has been awarded a significant contract to provide ongoing logistics and sustainment support for the U.S. Air Force’s crucial C-5M Super Galaxy aircraft fleet. This agreement, initially valued at a ceiling of $56 million, will fund essential maintenance and logistics services through May 2026.
The C-5M Super Galaxy is a modernized variant of the legendary C-5 Galaxy, making it one of the largest military transport aircraft globally. It plays a critical role in the U.S. Air Force’s strategic airlift capabilities, enabling the rapid global mobility of heavy and oversized cargo. This includes vital equipment such as tanks, helicopters, and large support systems, delivered directly to operational areas or disaster zones.
This new contract specifically supports the Super Galaxy fleet that has undergone extensive upgrades through both the Avionics Modernization Program (AMP) and the Reliability Enhancement and Re-engining Program (RERP). These modernization efforts have significantly improved the C-5’s reliability, maintainability, and operational efficiency, extending its service life well into the 21st century. The RERP, for instance, involved replacing the original engines with more powerful and fuel-efficient commercial engines, leading to a substantial increase in thrust, shorter takeoff rolls, and faster climb rates.
The contract was awarded to Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co., based in Marietta, Georgia, through a sole-source acquisition process. Initial funding of $27.4 million from fiscal year 2025 operations and maintenance accounts was obligated at the time of the award, ensuring immediate continuation of vital support services. Work related to this agreement will primarily be carried out at Lockheed’s Marietta facility.
This agreement ensures the continued strategic airlift capability for both the Air Mobility Command and the Air Force Reserve Command. The C-5M remains an indispensable asset for supporting rapid deployment and humanitarian relief operations worldwide, underlining its importance to national defense and global logistics.
