More than 200 prisoners escaped from a high-security facility in Karachi, Pakistan, after a series of low-intensity earthquakes caused widespread panic and chaos within Malir Jail.
The incident, which unfolded on Monday, saw 216 inmates break free, though authorities have confirmed the swift recapture of 78 within 24 hours.
The tremors led to prisoners resorting to violence, breaking down cell doors in an attempt to flee. Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul Hasan Lanjhar reported injuries to a dozen police officers and inmates, and tragically, one prisoner was shot and killed during the escape attempt.
In an effort to manage the situation, the government has announced a conditional offer: prisoners who voluntarily return will be considered for a reduction in their sentences.
However, those apprehended by law enforcement will face severe charges under anti-terrorism laws.
The escape has prompted immediate action, leading to the dismissal of the IG prisons, the jail superintendent, and other high-ranking officials.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have launched a joint operation to track down the remaining fugitives. Notably, over 100 Indian prisoners housed in a separate section of the jail remained secured in their cells throughout the disturbance.
