Poland Unveils Its First Delfin-Class Intelligence Ship to Bolster Baltic Sea Surveillance

Poland has marked a significant advancement in its naval capabilities with the launch of its first Delfin-class intelligence ship, the ORP Jerzy Różycki, on July 1, 2025. The ceremony, held at Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. in Gdańsk, signifies a pivotal step in Poland’s “Delfin” (Project 107) program, designed to dramatically enhance surveillance and intelligence gathering in the strategically vital Baltic Sea.

The Delfin program, initiated through a contract between Poland’s Armament Agency and Sweden’s Saab Kockums AB in November 2022, encompasses the design, construction, delivery, and logistical support for two cutting-edge Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) vessels. The ORP Jerzy Różycki, named after the renowned Polish mathematician and cryptologist, along with its future sister ship (to be named after Henryk Zygalski), will replace older reconnaissance vessels, ushering in a new era for Polish maritime intelligence.

Based on the design of the Swedish Artemis-class vessel HMS Artemis (A202), and featuring naval architecture from MMC Ship Design & Marine Consulting Ltd., these new ships will measure 74 meters in length and displace up to 3,000 tons. Powered by four diesel generators, the vessels are equipped with advanced reconnaissance and command systems supplied by Saab, serving as the primary system integrator. Both Delfin-class ships are slated for full delivery by the end of 2027.

Upon entering service, the ORP Jerzy Różycki will be integrated into the Group of Reconnaissance Ships of the 3rd Ship Flotilla at the Naval Base in Gdynia. These vessels will significantly expand Poland’s ability to monitor foreign naval units, ports, and various maritime activities, providing crucial intelligence. Their capabilities will also contribute directly to broader NATO intelligence-gathering operations across the Baltic Sea, reinforcing collective security in a region of increasing geopolitical importance.

This €620 million investment not only underscores Poland’s commitment to modernizing its navy but also its strategic focus on bolstering maritime domain awareness. The Delfin-class ships join other ongoing naval modernization efforts, including Kormoran II-class mine countermeasures vessels and Miecznik-class multi-role frigates, collectively transforming Poland’s naval power in the Baltic Sea.
