South Korea has achieved a significant milestone in its defense capabilities, successfully conducting a safe separation flight test of a domestically developed long-range air-to-surface guided missile. This critical test brings Seoul closer to equipping its next-generation KF-21 fighter jet with a precision deep-strike capability, a move that will profoundly enhance its deterrence posture.
The missile, informally dubbed the “Korean Taurus,” is the culmination of a major national effort initiated in 2018. The program aims to field a high-performance, stealth-capable strike weapon designed to match or even surpass the capabilities of the renowned German-made Taurus KEPD 350. The recent test confirmed the missile’s ability to safely detach from an aircraft without affecting its structural integrity or mounted equipment, while also verifying its basic flight safety and performance during deployment.
This advanced air-to-surface missile is engineered to engage high-value targets deep within enemy territory during the early stages of a conflict. It boasts cutting-edge features including stealth shaping for reduced detectability, high-precision guidance systems, and autonomous navigation capabilities, ensuring accuracy and effectiveness in challenging environments.
The successful test marks a crucial gateway in the weapon’s development. Looking ahead, South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) plans to conduct further developmental and operational evaluations using FA-50 aircraft. Integration tests aboard KF-21 prototypes are slated to begin in 2027, with full integration into the KF-21 fighter jet scheduled for completion before the end of the decade.
This homegrown development holds dual strategic importance for South Korea. Beyond strengthening its autonomous defense capabilities, it is expected to significantly boost the export competitiveness of the KF-21 package.
