The U.S. Navy’s Carrier Air Wing 5 (CVW-5) has successfully concluded its intensive Field Carrier Landing Practices (FCLPs) at Iwo To, Japan.

This vital training exercise marks a crucial final step for the air wing before its upcoming deployment aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington.

The rigorous drills saw naval aviators honing their skills in simulated carrier landing scenarios, conducted both during the day and under the challenging conditions of night.

The training involved a formidable lineup of modern naval aircraft, including the advanced F-35C Lightning IIs, versatile F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, the electronic warfare prowess of EA-18G Growlers, and the critical airborne early warning capabilities of E-2D Hawkeyes.

These FCLPs are specifically designed to prepare pilots for the highly demanding task of landing on a moving aircraft carrier deck at sea, a maneuver requiring immense precision and coordination.

A significant component of these practices also involved Landing Signal Officers (LSOs), who are responsible for guiding aircraft safely onto the deck.

LSOs actively utilized the Manually Operated Visual Landing Aid System (MOVLAS), refining their techniques to ensure maximum safety and efficiency during recoveries.

While Iwo To proves to be an effective and essential training ground for these specialized maneuvers, its remote location does present inherent logistical challenges for sustained operations.

Despite these hurdles, the strategic importance of such training remains paramount for maintaining the readiness and operational excellence of the U.S. Navy’s carrier strike groups.

The successful completion of these drills underscores the continuous commitment of the U.S. Navy to maintaining a high state of preparedness and projecting naval air power effectively in the Indo-Pacific region.

As CVW-5 readies itself for deployment on the USS George Washington, this training ensures that both aircrew and support personnel are fully prepared for the demanding environment of carrier-based operations.
