Türkiye has secured significant backing from the United Kingdom in its quest to acquire Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, a move seen as pivotal for modernizing the Turkish Air Force and deepening NATO interoperability. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy publicly affirmed the UK’s full support for Türkiye’s participation in the Eurofighter Typhoon program, highlighting its strategic importance for both regional security and alliance cohesion. London is now actively engaged in efforts to overcome existing political hurdles, particularly from Germany, a key member of the Eurofighter consortium.
The Eurofighter Typhoon, a highly agile, multi-role combat aircraft, forms the backbone of air superiority for several NATO air forces, including those of the UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain, which jointly developed the jet. Türkiye’s keen interest in the Typhoon stems from its pressing need to diversify and enhance its air power capabilities, especially following its exclusion from the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program in 2019. While Ankara is also investing heavily in its indigenous fifth-generation KAAN fighter, the Eurofighter is viewed as an essential interim solution to bridge any capability gaps and ensure technological parity until the KAAN reaches full operational maturity.
